who we are
Mountain Light School develops comprehensive interdisciplinary education curriculum for use in public, private, or homeschool settings. We consider our curriculum to be a guide to expansive learning. Our material is comprised of a series of “Journeys of Discovery,” which are approaches to learning based on themes of world exploration and discovery. Although appropriate for inquirers at any age, the materials are designed for middle level/junior high classrooms. The curriculum was prepared by longtime educators Dr. Richard Scheuerman and Dr. Arthur Ellis, with illustrations by James LeGette.
Dr. Scheuerman was raised on a small farm between the rural Palouse Country communities of Endicott and St. John, Washington, and is a career professional educator and historian. He has over twenty-five years of public school teaching and administration service, and also served as the head of Seattle Pacific University’s Masters of Teaching program for several years. His honors include the Washington State Historical Society's Robert Gray Medal for outstanding contributions to history education and the Washington Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Scheuerman's awards for published works include the Governor's Writers Award, Washington State Book of the Year Finalist, and Inland Northwest Magazine's Best of Issue Article. He can be found on LinkedIn here.
Dr. Arthur K. Ellis is a former public school teacher with doctorates from the University of Oregon and the University of the Russian Academy of Education. He came to SPU after leaving the University of Minnesota where he was professor of education. Presently he serves at SPU as Professor of Education and Director of the Center for Global Curriculum Studies. He is also Corresponding Professor of Education at the University of the Russian Academy of Education. Dr. Ellis teaches in the School of Education Doctoral Studies Program with a specialty in curriculum and instruction. He is the author of 20 published books, numerous articles, and presentations at regional, national, and international conferences.
